Dark times have come to Little Joey. It's always been difficult being the 14-year-old nephew of a smuggler. Especially if you're forced into the family business, are shot at by rival smugglers and are one heart-pounding step away from being chased by the police.

All he wants is to escape the excruciating frigid Detroit depression. Escape his family's illegal and treacherous bootlegging business. Leave behind the boarding house filled with need and an ensemble of characters. Earn enough money to escape the ruthless depression and leave on the train with Detroit coal merchant, James Buchanan, and his boys, to Alaska. And, oh yes, to kiss the girl with eyes as blue as the Blue Willow china that sits on the table of the family boarding house.

Come back to 1930. Come back to old Detroit where men stand in breadlines to eat, bootleggers ride across a frozen river in the frigid night, exposed and fearful of falling in, teens "ride the rails" to survive, citizens are snatched up in the middle of the night and deported, and some people are even eating weeds.

There is a glossary of terms at the end of the book to describe words, events, people and Detroit products from this era. "What Do You Think?" at the end of book will facilitate discussion for book clubs and classrooms. This historical fiction book is appropriate for middle school, high school and adults.

The subject of immigration and immigrants is depicted throughout the story. Although immigrants from Eastern Europe are prevalent in the story, the book also touches on the Mexican Repatriation which is the forced return to Mexico of people of Mexican descent from the United States between 1929-1936.

The novel is set in a boarding house on the East side of Detroit, just off Jefferson Avenue. During The Great Depression, this was a common and inexpensive way for people to live.

"A wonderful, thought provoking book." Adrian Fogelin, award winning author of "Crossing Jordan"

I enjoyed this book at many different levels. Having grown up in Flint, Michigan, close to Detroit, so many of the references were familiar. It took me back to a time when we used to go to the “big city” to see the sights, explore the neighborhoods and enjoy the food. I had no knowledge of Mr. Buchanan and Alaska. Fascinating. My parents and grandparents often talked of the Great Depression so this book allowed me to relive those discussions as well. This book is well written, funny, sad and poignant. It is also very timely. As I grieve what is happening right now in this country, let us pay attention to our history, so we won’t be doomed to repeat it. I would recommend this book!

This is one of the best books I have read. It opened my eyes to what really occurred in the depression in detroit and I got so wrapped up in the lives of these people I ended up crying for them. A definite must to read ....I am hoping for a sequel to be written so I can see what happened to them...
